The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region’s photography-themed “Masters Behind the Camera” lecture series takes the audience on a journey through the history of Tampere and the Pirkanmaa region.

The spring season opens on 11 March with the lecture “Women of Tampere in Old Photographs,” which shows how women’s lives have been captured in historical photographs. Was everyday life just drudgery in the shadow of the factory bricks? The lecture on the women of Tampere will be given by Antti Liuttunen, a researcher from the Vapriikki Photo Archive.

The second part of the lecture series on 25 March will explore the 200-year-old Old Church of Tampere. How have churches been visible in the landscapes of Tampere, and what significance have they had for ordinary people? The lecture will feature photographs of churches and stories about common folk and those who sat in the pews. The topic will be presented by Hanna-Liisa Onnela, Executive Director of the Tampere-Seura Association.

The spring season concludes with the third part of the series on 8 April “Pirkanmaa in Old Photographs,” which introduces the audience to historical snapshots of Kangasala, Lempäälä, Valkeakoski, and Pirkkala. How have the municipalities surrounding Tampere been captured in old photographs? The photo journey will be led by Antti Liuttunen, a researcher from the Vapriikki Photo Archive.

The “Masters Behind the Camera” lectures are held on Tuesdays in the Sampola Auditorium from 5:30 pm to 7:45 pm. The Sampola Auditorium has accessible entry. The lectures are free of charge, and no prior registration is required.

The lectures are in Finnish.

The “Masters Behind the Camera” lectures can also be followed live on the YouTube channel of The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region.
