Free admission to the Surrealism exhibition at the Tampere Art Museum on 4 April

Surrealism – A Collective Dream celebrates the one-hundred-year history of international surrealist art. This full-house exhibition explores surrealist art’s vision of reality, highlighting encounters between the movement’s pioneers and notable contemporary artists.
The immersive and striking exhibition Surrealism – A Collective Dream offers a multifaceted exploration of the art movement. The exhibition delves into the subconscious and the instability of reality, showcasing works by avant-garde artists like Max Ernst, René Magritte, Yves Tanguy, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, Penny Slinger, Herbert Bayer, Meret Oppenheim, and Claude Cahun, as well as contemporary artists such as Cindy Sherman, Tony Oursler, Erwin Wurm, Yayoi Kusama, Erró, and Sarah Lucas.
Additionally, segments from surrealist films and series, including works by Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí, David Lynch, and Alfred Hitchcock, will be featured. Central themes include identity, gender, technology, and mental health, each viewed from diverse perspectives. The exhibition comprises paintings, photographs, sculptures, prints, and films, covering approximately 140 works by nearly seventy artists.
As part of the Surrealism exhibition, media art by Marco Brambilla, an Italian-born artist based in London, will be shown in the Nordic countries for the first time. His work Heaven’s Gate (2022), featured in Tampere, has been regarded as a commentary on American maximalism and the onslaught of imagery, serving as a kind of metaverse or hyperreality for our time.
Surrealism – A Collective Dream will be on display at the Tampere Art Museum until August 10, 2025. The exhibition has been produced in collaboration with the German Institut für Kulturaustausch.
Tampere Art Museum offers free admission days approximately once a month. The free admission days for the rest of the year are 4 April, 2 May, 6 June, 4 July, 1 August, 24 October, 21 November, and 19 December, 2025. Free entry is also always available with a Museum Card, Active Pass, and Kaikukortti.
