Our school in Pyynikki

The historical and valuable Pyynikintie 2 is the future upper secondary school building of Hatanpään lukio.
The number of upper secondary school students in Tampere is increasing. As part of the development of Tampere's upper secondary school network, Hatanpään lukio will move to its new permanent premises at Pyynikintie 2 during the 2025-2026 school year. Our new name will be Pyynikin lukio Upper Secondary School starting from August 1, 2025. From August 2025, our upper secondary school will grow. By 2028, we will have up to 750 students. Pyynikintie 2, located near the city center, can be reached by tram either to the Pyynikintori or Metso stops.
The old historical building at Pyynikintie 2 has been completely renovated, with only the structure and beautiful exterior of the building remaining original. In Tampere, the property at Pyynikintie 2 is also known as "Vanha Teku" because the building was originally constructed in 1916 and expanded in 1934 as the Tampere Technical College. The building is classified as a nationally significant built cultural environment. During the Civil War in 1918, the headquarters of the Tampere Red Guard operated in the historical building. The renovation of the property has been completed, but we cannot yet use the facilities because they are first needed as temporary premises for other ongoing renovations.
Our current upper secondary school building in Rantaperkiö is urgently needed for basic education use, as the number of children and young people in Härmälä and Hatanpää is growing rapidly.
The move of Hatanpään lukio - the future Pyynikin lukio - to the city center is also due to Hatanpään lukio's status as a special education upper secondary school for music (music and musical theater). At Pyynikintie 2, we will be located close to the Tampere Conservatory and the Pirkanmaa Music Institute, which will further strengthen our cooperation.
The large common multifunctional space and school restaurant on the first floor of Pyynikintie 2, as well as floors 2-4 in their entirety, will be used by Pyynikin lukio. The design was made from the beginning to meet the needs of the special education task in music - both music and musical theater. The project's architect was the Helsinki-based architectural firm Von Boehm - Renell Oy, which specializes in the design of school buildings. The wishes of the teachers were well taken into account in the project, including group workspaces for the mother tongue, changing rooms for physical education, and music rooms.
The main floors of the upper secondary school are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. The second floor will house the teaching of the mother tongue and literature, as well as natural sciences and the upper secondary school administration. The student council will have its own meeting room and lounge near the administrative offices. (Image: Project study image of the design of the 2nd floor of the property.)

On the third floor, there are classrooms for visual arts, languages, and general subjects. Many of the rooms are combinable or divisible, allowing for flexible use. On the days of the matriculation examination, the classrooms can be opened up into large common exam spaces. The gymnasium and the musical theater classroom form their own athletic unit, allowing larger groups to be divided into different spaces.
On the fourth floor are the music facilities. Two large classrooms with studios and other auxiliary spaces enable extensive music activities. Additionally, there are band rooms in the basement of the property. Our partners, the Pirkanmaa Music Institute and the Tampere Conservatory, have shown interest in renting these high-quality facilities in the evenings.
Pyynikintie 2 is a large building, partly four and partly five stories high. In addition to the upper secondary school, the building will house basic education facilities. The basement will accommodate the craft and home economics classrooms of Vivi Lönn School. The basement and the first floor will also have spaces for a 12-class elementary school as temporary premises - there is a permanent need for such spaces in the city, and according to the plan, each relocating school will use the premises for about one and a half years. The first floor will also house student welfare facilities.
The beautiful gymnasium at Pyynikintie 2 is rather small, and some of the large physical education groups will exercise outside the building. The stunning landscapes of Pyynikki and Eteläpuisto will become familiar to future upper secondary school students. On the other hand, students will continue to move to other locations for some courses, as is currently the practice. There are many sports facilities in the Pyynikki area and on the west side of the city center, but also many users of these facilities. Organizing physical education will require joint planning with other operators in the area in the future.
