Tampere is Home of the Moomin Museum – Moomin experiences for tourists as well as for locals

The city of Tampere has signed a three-year cooperation agreement with Moomin Characters Oy Ltd. The 80th anniversary of the Moomins marks the beginning of a partnership that will highlight Tampere as the home of the only Moomin Museum in the world.

The three-year license agreement has been signed for the period 15.10.2024–15.10.2027. The cooperation creates new opportunities for Tampere to strengthen the city's experience economy and the visibility and awareness of the Moomin Museum. The core of the partnership is the Moomin Museum and increasing the museum's activities and visibility. At the same time, the fact that the world's only Moomin Museum and the collection donated by Tove Jansson are located in Tampere will be more prominently visible in the Tampere cityscape.

– I have long been impressed by the dynamic nature of the city of Tampere. I feel that decision-making is more flexible than elsewhere in Finland. There seems to be a sense of trust between the different actors in the city, says Roleff Kråkström, CEO of Moomin Characters.

– Our ever-expanding cooperation has felt natural, and the wider interface that is now being created in Tampere with the Moomins will be a great support for the world's only Moomin Museum in Tampere Hall. We are very happy about this, Kråkström continues.

Shared experiences and community spirit

2025 will be the 80th anniversary of the Moomin stories, and the hometown of Moomin Museum, Tampere, will celebrate the anniversary in a number of ways. The anniversary year begins with the Midwinter Magic festivities on Epiphany, and during the winter holiday week, you can encounter Moomins not only at the museum but also at other cultural sites in the city. The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra will premiere composer Minna Leinonen’s captivating new piece, which is inspired by Tove Jansson’s charming story The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My. On Tove Jansson’s birthday, August 9, 2025, the Moomin 80 – The Great Birthday Party will be held at Tampere Hall. One of the highlights of the year is the exhibition Welcome to Moominhouse! in Moomin Museum.

– At the Moomin Museum we are looking forward to deepening our cooperation and creating a series of events to mark the anniversary, says Selma Green, director of the Moomin Museum.

The anniversary will strengthen the cooperation between the City of Tampere and the Moomin Characters.

– The Moomins are one of Finland's most internationally recognized brands. Tampere is a true city of art and culture, and thanks to this partnership we will be able to strengthen this image both nationally and internationally in the years to come, says Kalervo Kummola, Mayor of Tampere.

The events, which reflect the essence of Tampere, will enliven the city, offer community experiences, participation and be part of the international anniversary program. The gem of the Moomin Museum's collection is the original Moominhouse built by Tove Jansson, Tuulikki Pietilä and Pentti Eistola.

– What the Moomins and the people of Tampere have in common is the courage to do things their own way. Our goal is that the unique experience of the Moomin Museum can also be enjoyed outside the walls of the museum. In the future, the Moomins and the Moomin Museum will be a more visible part of Tampere's cityscape. The cooperation is a good opportunity for Tampere to strengthen the citizens' pride in their hometown and to promote Tampere to the world, says Iina Ojala, Public Relations and Marketing Manager of the City of Tampere.
