Summer clubs for pupils in June 2025 and after-school activities in the academic year 2025–2026

There will be changes to morning and after-school activities in basic education and the activities of summer clubs, and the pricing of the activities will also change. How will the changes to these services affect the daily life and services of families with children in summer 2025 and academic year 2025–2026 in practice?

The Education Committee decided on changes to the services earlier on 11 March 2025. The decision is based on making the activities more transparent and the annual plan for 2025 previously approved by the Committee.
Applications for after-school activities and summer clubs are about to open.

The application period for after-school activities is 1–21 April 2025 and the application period for summer clubs is 22 April – 6 May 2025.

Nine summer clubs in summer 2025

Summer clubs will be organised in a centralised manner between 2 and 27 June 2025 in nine locations. In the coming summer, summer clubs for 1st and 2nd graders will be organised at the schools of Etelä-Hervanta, Karonen, Kämmenniemi, Lielahti/Lentävänniemi (the place will be confirmed on 11 April), Linnainmaa, Peltolammi, Sampo and Tesoma.

There will be 800 summer club places available this summer, which is less than last year. As a rule, you can apply for a summer club place at the summer club closest to the child’s current school. If there are more applicants than places (max. 100 children per club), the places in these clubs will be assigned at random.

Summer club activities will be organised at the Puistokoulu School between 2 and 27 June 2025 for its own pupils and other pupils in need of demanding support who have a decision on special support and a need for a full-time instructor. Additionally, on-duty services for pupils with a special care decision in need of special support will be organised at the Puistokoulu School in the summer between 21 July and 1 August 2025. As the number of places is limited even at the Puistokoulu School, needs assessment will be used to allocate the places, if necessary.

In summer 2025, the clubs will operate from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:00. (Except for Midsummer week, when the activities will be organised Mon–Thu.) The fee for summer club activities is EUR 80 per week. The fee will be charged for the weeks entered on the registration form.

You can apply for a fee exemption for summer activities. If the morning and after-school activities of the pupil have been free of charge in the academic year 2024–2025, no fee will be charged for summer activities either. The new, more extensive exemption criteria for the academic year 2025–2026 will not enter into force until 1 August 2025.

The application period for summer clubs is 22 April – 6 May 2025.

School will start earlier

The morning activities organised for pupils before the school day will end entirely at the beginning of August 2025. From the beginning of the academic year 2025–2026, all pupils in the 1st grade will be guaranteed to start school from the first lesson (mainly between 8:15 and 8:30). A later starting time, i.e., 9:00, is possible if the pupil does not have an immediate need for an earlier starting time and if a later start fits their timetable. 2nd graders’ school days will begin at 9:00 at the latest.

The principal of the school decides on the starting time of the first lesson.

The principal of the Hatanpää School Mari Palviainen says that school days at the Hatanpää School have already started either at 8:15 or at 9:00. There have been morning and after-school activities at the Hatanpää School in two clubs, on Haapakuja and on Talvitie.

“Once the morning club is no longer organised, we will allow those who need it to start their school day at 8:15. This service commitment applies to pupils in the 1st grade.”

“The classroom assistant will come fetch pupils using school transport as needed, either at 8:00 or 9:00. Some of the classroom assistant will also be guiding the pupils in the morning during lessons, in addition to the teacher being present,” says Mari Palviainen.

“My main message is that the everyday life of a young pupil will not change very much next August. Normal mornings can be arranged at school. This will be specified before school begins next August,” says Palviainen.

The number of hours of after-school activities is the same for all

From the beginning of the academic year 2025–2026, the daily hours of after-school activities will be the same for everyone, and the fee will cover the activities between 12:00 and 17:00.

After-school activities will be organised for pupils in 1st and 2nd grades and those who have been granted a decision on support or who have a disability, illness or limited functional capacity that affects their ability to learn. After-school activities will also be offered to children participating in bilingual pre-primary education in basic education.

From 1 August 2025, the after-school activities fee will be EUR 160 per month.

Families can continue to apply for a fee exemption applicable to after-school activities. As of 1 August 2025, the principles of the fee exemption will be extended to also apply to general housing allowance. A fee exemption for after-school activities may be granted if the family receives social assistance/reception allowance or general housing allowance, they have a child with intellectual disabilities requiring rehabilitation, or after-school activities are required as a child welfare support measure.

The sibling discount is EUR 10 of the oldest sibling’s fee if a sibling from the same family also attends morning and after-school activities. One half of the fee will be charged for absences due to an illness or it will not be collected at all.

The application period for after-school activities is 1–21 April 2025.
