The City of Tampere has insured pupils in the case of an accident. Any accident that may occur while commuting to or from school is covered by the City of Tampere insurance policy, excepting such cases as may involve a car or another motor vehicle. In such cases, the damage will instead be reimbursed through the mandatory motor insurance policy.

This insurance policy covers all activities under the school curriculum, including distance learning, practical training, and class trips and school trips within Finland. The insurance also applies to morning and afternoon activities as well as Lupa liikkua / Lupa harrastaa activities.
The insurance policy shall reimburse the medical costs of treatment rendered by both public and private providers.
According to the terms of the insurance policy, an accident is defined as a sudden, external, unexpected incident causing bodily harm taking place outside the insured person’s control. Also the following incidents, happening outside the insured person’s control, are considered accidents: drowning, heatstroke, freezing injury, gas poisoning, injury caused by sudden fluctuation of air pressure, and poisoning by a substance consumed by mistake.
The following examples are not considered to be accidents:
Pupils in grades 7 through 9 are insured through the Turva insurance company for lessons related to practical subjects (technical and textile crafts, home economics, practical lessons in physics and chemistry, the TET work practice period). In the case of an accident requiring medical attention, the teacher will provide the pupil with a filled-in insurance certificate, allowing the health care provider to directly bill Turva for any costs incurred.
The City of Tampere has taken out a travel insurance policy for basic education pupils and general upper secondary education students. This insurance applies to journeys abroad made in accordance with the curriculum and with a duration of no more than one month. It does not, however, apply to travel to risk areas (if.fi/warrisks).
The insurance policy covers the medical costs incurred due to illness or accident during the journey with no upper limit of costs. Accidents that occur while engaged in risky sports or activities are not covered under this policy. Apart from medical costs, the insurance policy covers any costs incurred by the interruption or cancellation of a trip or lateness from that trip. No baggage is insured under this policy.
