Digitisation and editing in libraries

In Lielahti and Sampola libraries, you can digitize C-cassettes either to CD discs or as mp3 files.

The Lielahti Library has a record player, for transferring vinyl records to CD discs or mp3 files. The record player can be requested from the library's customer service and is only available when the library is staffed.

For successful digitisation, the records must be in good condition. If necessary, cleaning equipment is also available on site. You can make a reservation for a digitisation session.

A CD-RW disc purchased from the library costs €1.50.

Separate scanners connected to a computer are available in these libraries:

• Main Library Metso
• Hervanta 
• Kaukajärvi
• Lielahti
• Messukylä
• Sampola (out of service for now)
• Tesoma

Slides and negatives can be scanned in Metso, Hervanta, Lielahti and Sampola Libraries.

In Hervanta and Sampola, it is also possible to scan 35 mm and 120-type films. In Lielahti, 35 mm films can be scanned. Please note that scanner models and guidance resources vary from branch to branch. You should check in advance, either by phone or on the spot, what scanning facilities are available in your library. In addition to stand-alone scanners, most libraries have multifunctional machines that can scan ordinary photographs to email or memory media.

The scanners are reserved in the reservation system, identified by the letter ‘s’ after the machine number.

At Sampola Library, a VHS cassette can be digitised directly into a video file, for example on the customer's own memory device.

Digitisation takes the same time as the length of the recording, i.e. for example, a two-hour video tape takes two hours to digitise. The equipment is accompanied by clear instructions for use. 

You can bring your own DVD with you or buy one from the library (cost €2).  All blank single-layer DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs, except Maxell and Sony discs, are suitable for recording.

Hobby Room Visio in Main Library Metso allows you to edit images using Adobe applications.

GIMP and Paint.net are installed on all client computers. The editing machine in the Lielahti Library has Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro X7.

All library computers are equipped with Audacity software for audio editing. In the Main Library Metso (Hobby Room Soundi and Rockway room), audio editing is possible using Logic Pro X software and the Reaper application.

There is a separate video editing machine in Lielahti and Sampola Libraries. The machine can be booked for use for three hours at a time either by phone or through the library’s reservation system. 

The video editing machine at Sampola is equipped with Adobe Premiere Elements 2020, at Lielahti with version 14.  You can also edit videos in the Main Library Metso’s hobby room Visio, using Adobe applications. 

Sampola also has a VHS recorder, which allows editing material to be imported to the computer directly from a VHS video cassette.

The editing machine deletes the files stored on the hard disk each time it is started, so the customer’s own files must be stored on a separate storage device.

Digitised material can be saved e.g. on a memory stick, CD or DVD record or external hard drive.
