The City of Tampere is developing climate change mitigation, adaptation and preparedness through various projects. On this page you will find a thematic summary of both ongoing and recently completed projects and initiatives.

Sustainable mobility

In the EU-funded Mobility Mindshift project, the City of Tampere, the city's upper secondary schools, TREDU and the University of Tampere are encouraging 15-29-year-olds in Tampere to use sustainable mobility.

The Mobility Mindshift project aims to inspire upper secondary education students and young adults in Tampere to increase their use of sustainable transport. The project will involve young people in brainstorming sustainable mobility solutions through events and workshops, and increase interaction between city decision-makers and experts and young people. The Mobility Mindshift project is funded by the Horizon Europe funding programme. The project will run from 2024 to 2026.

Promoting cities' carbon neutrality objectives in decision-making

The City of Tampere is participating in the international Climate-4-CAST project, which is developing tools and methodologies to help cities achieve their carbon neutrality targets. Tampere is one of the pilot cities in the project. The pilot in Tampere will include the introduction of a climate action decision support tool developed in the project, improved calculation of emissions and economic impact assessment of climate actions, and the development of climate budgeting as part of the city's financial planning.

The project is funded by the Baltic Sea Region Interreg programme and involves partners and cities from six countries around the Baltic Sea: Latvia, Poland, Sweden, Germany, Finland and Denmark. In the city, the project is implemented by the Climate and Environmental Policy Unit.

The biodiversity and carbon footprint of procurement

The City of Tampere, together with the University of Jyväskylä, studied the environmental impact of the city's procurement. The joint development project calculated the impact of the 2021 operational procurement on biodiversity and carbon emissions, and was completed at the end of 2023.

The City of Tampere looked into the environmental impacts of its procurements in cooperation with the School of Resource Wisdom of the University of Jyväskylä (JYU.Wisdom). The city and the university calculated the impact of operational procurement on biodiversity and carbon emissions. The research will continue by calculating the biodiversity footprint and handprint of construction at three sites.
