07 Suolijärvi nature trail information board

The Suolijärvi nature trail runs for about five kilometres around Lake Suolijärvi. Along the way, 14 information tables will help you discover the area's diverse nature and species, as well as the themes of environmental change and nature conservation.

Why is nature conservation important?

Because of the interactions between species, the loss of one species from an area can have far-reaching effects on other species in the area. Species loss also affects ecosystem services, the functions of nature on which humans depend. Finding a balance between the use of nature and its conservation is a vital task in the current times.

What ecosystem services does the nature of Lake Suolijärvi provide to its visitors?

Endangerment

The change in land usage is the main cause of extinction or decline of species in Finland as well as around the world.

Due to forestry and the overgrowth of grasslands, most of Finland's threatened species are found in old forests and grassland habitats. Many species and ecosystem services can be protected with the defence and restoration of these habitats.

What’s a way you can enjoy the nature of Lake Suolijärvi while also supporting its well-being?

Species knowledge and nature conservation

The assessment of the threatened status of species is based on observations of species and their changes, and knowledge of species is therefore an important prerequisite for targeting conservation measures.

The diverse nature of Lake Suolijärvi harbours many potential habitats for endangered species. The area is one of the most valuable vegetation and insect sites in the Tampere region, as well as home to gliding squirrels and other rare species. The insects in the picture are both strictly protected by the EU and are species of conservation concern in Pirkanmaa.

Why are insects an important part of nature?

Species in the Nature Conservation Act

The various categories of protection set out in the Act aim to protect endangered species and their habitats. The strongest protection is given to directive species, which are under strict EU protection and whose habitats must not be degraded, and to protected species, which must not be harmed and are liable to compensation for damage. Pirkanmaa also has its own responsible species, whose habitat and occurrence are concentrated in Pirkanmaa and whose prevention of endangerment is therefore important here.

Like many insects, many other species depend on aspen trees. Saving aspen trees is therefore an important way to protect species and their habitats in Lake Suolijärvi too!
