Joint application procedure (yhteishaku)

The joint application to upper secondary education is a national procedure that Tampereen lyseon lukio high school uses when selecting new students to all three of its programmes. Apply by submitting the application online in Studyinfo (Opintopolku) during the application period (Spring 2025: 18.2. - 18.3.2025).

For more information on applying to general high school programme or Social Sciences line, please visit this site in Finnish.

Applying to the IB

The International Baccalaureate programme at the Tampereen lyseon lukio is intended for the following groups of students: Finnish comprehensive school graduates, children of Finnish families that are moving back to Finland from abroad, and foreign students who move to Finland with their families because of their parents' work. We do not enroll foreign students who would move to Tampere without their parents. Tampereen lyseon lukio is not a high school for adults and preparatory year students are usually 15-16 years of age at the start of their studies. The yearly intake into the IB programme is approximately 50 students.

Most applicants to the preparatory year apply via the national online application system run by the National Board of Education. 1-5 study places are reserved to those applying after the official application period has ended.

Applying from Finland

Application from students in Finnish schools are warmly welcomed. No prior experience in international education is required. If you wish to apply to the IB programme at Tampereen lyseon lukio, please complete the online joint application form through the Studyinfo/Opintopolku system during the application period.

Students applying from Finnish comprehensive schools are chosen based on their grade point average of the theoretical subjects from the previous school. In the calculation of the GPA, English and Mathematics grades will be multiplied by two so that they will have a double weighting. The minimum requirement for the GPA is 8.2. Applicants who have Tampereen lyseon lukio IB section as their first choice on the General applications form will be notified about the admission result.

Applying from other countries or other school systems

Applicants from outside Finland should submit a written explanation outlining their reasons for applying and providing a brief description of their educational background and interests in upper secondary school studies. This should be sent to our IB Coordinator along with an IB application form and the most recent report card. If applicable, explanatory comments about the grading system should be included. The application form is available for download on our website. Applicants must also register through Studyinfo.fi using the non-domestic quota (known in Finnish as harkinnanvarainen).

All applicants from abroad are required to take entrance exams in Mathematics and English. Please contact the IB Coordinator to arrange these exams.

The student selection is based on the applicants’ previous academic performance and entrance exams in English and Mathematics. Special attention will be paid to the applicants’ previous grades in English, Mathematics, and the mother tongue/first language. These students must have a valid reason for needing an English-language study place in Tampere. Please note that we do not enroll foreign students who plan to move to Tampere without their parents.

Applying directly to the 2-year Diploma Programme

Students who have already completed one full year of upper secondary education may apply to join the IB programme directly, bypassing the Pre-DP year. These applications should be made directly to the school, rather than through Studyinfo.fi. Applicants should submit a written explanation of their reasons for applying, along with a brief description of their educational background and academic interests. This explanation, along with the IB application form and the applicant’s most recent report card, should be sent to our IB Coordinator. If applicable, explanatory comments about the grading system should be included. The application form can be downloaded from our website.

As with other international applicants, those applying directly to the Diploma Programme must take entrance exams in Mathematics and English. Please contact the IB Coordinator to discuss arrangements for these exams. Applicants can be admitted directly to the 2-year Diploma Programme if there are available places.

Study costs

The students pay for all material they need (such as schoolbooks and a laptop computer), unless they are entitled to receive upper secondary education free of charge. The right to upper secondary education free of charge applies to students who are required to attend compulsory education by Finnish law, typically those who finish comprehensive education in Finland. The extension of compulsory education does not apply to those born in 2003 or earlier. More information about the extension of compulsory education and who it applies to via this link Extension of compulsory education

Language requirements

IB Diploma always requires two languages: a native language and a foreign one, or two native languages. We offer the following languages:

  1. Finnish and English as native languages
  2. Finnish as a foreign language (requires 3-5 years of previous studies of the language)
  3. French and Spanish as foreign languages
    • student groups for these are only formed if the group size is big enough
    • some of the teaching in these  languages will happen in Finnish
  4. School supported Self-taught language
    • if you don’t have enough command of Finnish, but you have sufficient skills to study a literature programme in your native language independently for final exams.
    • the school provides a supervisor, but the student is responsible for any other costs such as materials and hiring a language teacher.
