Tampere hosts a summer camp for young people from Kyiv
The Ukrainian youngsters will take part in the “Best of Sorja” camp (Sorjan parhaat in Finnish) together with Finnish children and young people. The camp offers a wide range of guided activities from games and crafts to outdoor activities. The camp will be run by the camp directors, trained counsellors and other camp staff at Tampereen Kesäsiirtolayhdistys, a non-profit summer camp association. After the camp, the young people from Kyiv and those accompanying them will spend another day in Tampere.
In addition to the cities of Tampere and Kyiv and Tampereen Kesäsiirtolayhdistys, the trip and its programme have been supported by Air Baltic, LOT Polish Airlines and Särkänniemi.
The aim of the camp is to support young people affected by the war in Ukraine and provide them with activities. Tampere supported Kyiv by organising a similar camp last year, with ten young people from Kyiv attending. A number of different summer camps are organised for Ukrainian children and young people across Europe.
- Tampere still has a strong will to help Ukraine and the Ukrainians. Supporting children and young people in the form of a camp together with others is one example of what we are doing. It's great that we can again host a camp for children and young people from Kyiv, says mayor Kalervo Kummola.
Earlier this year, the City of Tampere sent aggregates and generators donated through the Generators of Hope campaign to Kyiv. Books in Ukrainian have also been provided for the library and schools to support Ukrainian children in Tampere. Tampere and Kyiv have been twin cities since 1954.
