Lisa Glybchenko's workshop explores the role of art in peace-building

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the twinning of Tampere and Kyiv. As part of the anniversary, the City of Tampere publishes stories about people from Kyiv living in Tampere on its social media channels and on the tampere.fi website. The third article in the series is about artist and PhD student Lisa Glybchenko, who is organising peace-themed art workshops during the Tampere Day weekend.

Ukrainian artist and Tampere University PhD student Lisa Glybchenko is looking forward to the upcoming weekend. Her Color up Peace art workshops will start on Friday 27 September as part of the Tampere Day weekend.  The first workshop will take place on Friday at the Ukraina-talo and the other two will be held on Saturday 28 September at the Culture House Laikku and the Ratina shopping centre.

Lisa originally came to Tampere in 2018 as a master's student at the University of Tampere and fell in love with the local life. Her journey in Tampere continued when she returned to her familiar university as a PhD student in 2021. Today, Lisa divides her time between Kyiv and Tampere.

Lisa's doctoral thesis explores the potential of artistic innovation and digital technology to support peace efforts. The Color up Peace art project is part of her research.

In the workshop, participants will colour large-scale outlines drawn by Lisa. These outlines are based on photographs of Finnish and Ukrainian people.

With this collaborative work, Lisa wants to show the connections between Tampere and Kyiv, and more broadly between Finland and Ukraine.

“I consider both cities and countries my home. Now many other Ukrainians may feel the same way, but for tragic reasons. I believe that the ultimate message of this work is that building and defending peace is everyone's responsibility," says Lisa.

The pieces created in the workshops will be part of Tampere's Festival of Light and the Window Walkabout event, which will bring light art to the city's streetscapes behind various windows and screens. The works from the Color up Peace workshop will be on display at the Window Walkabout event from 24 October to 3 November 2024.
