The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region Publishes Its Own Principles for a Safer Space – Comment on the Draft by November 15th

The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region has published the first version of its principles for a safer space, which everyone is invited to comment on until November 15, 2024. The principles will be finalized during the autumn of 2024 and will be implemented at the beginning of the spring semester of 2025.

The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region is committed to creating a learning environment where everyone can feel safe and welcome.

– The need to create principles for a safer space has arisen both in general discussions and from the feedback we received during the development of our equality and non-discrimination plan, says assistant principal Anne Partanen.

The Centre’s principles are based on the safer space principles of the City of Tampere, and they have been tailored with specific wording and examples from the Centre’s daily life. Initially, the principles will be available in both Finnish and English.

The Adult Education Centre hopes to receive feedback on the safer space principles by November 15, 2024. Feedback can be given on both the wording and the content. Would you like to phrase something differently? Is there something missing from the principles?

The Principles for a safer space will also include the contact information for the Centre’s harassment contact person and also the option to contact them anonymously. The principles will be published on the Centre’s website and will also be displayed as posters in the Centre’s own class rooms and made available to teachers working elsewhere.

The Principles for a safer space of the Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region

Each of us is unique. Our characteristics include age, ethnic origin, nationality, language and culture, religion, belief, opinion, political view, family structure, gender identity, sexual orientation, health status, disability, social status, economic status, and other individual factors such as body size or being part of the neurodiverse spectrum.

At the Adult Education Centre, everyone can safely be themselves and feel welcome.

  • We are polite and considerate towards everyone. We also value ourselves.
  • We respect each other’s self-identification and privacy. We do not make assumptions. We respect what a person shares about themselves, as everyone shares as much as they want.
  • We give others space and peace to work. We do not criticize others’ work, creations, or skills, nor do we make assumptions about them.
  • We do not disturb others, for example, by making noise, touching, or coming too close without permission. Everyone sets their own boundaries.
  • We pay attention to our choice of words. We do not use offensive language.
  • We listen and encourage. We can constructively disagree. We respect others and their values.
  • We can make mistakes and ask questions, as we do not assume everyone knows the same things. We celebrate successes together.
  • We address disrespectful behavior.
  • We maintain the atmosphere and spaces responsibly together.

The Adult Education Centre will also include the contact information for the harassment contact person in the safer space principles and the option to provide feedback anonymously.
