Visit and travel along Puutarhakatu – roadworks began on 3 March

The roadworks on Puutarhakatu began on 3 March 2025 in the intersections of Hämeenpuisto, Näsilinnankatu and Kuninkaankatu and along the street between Kuninkaankatu and Aleksis Kiven katu. The work will affect traffic arrangements, but properties can still be accessed. Through traffic on the street will be blocked during excavation work on the carriageway. You can move between Aleksis Kiven katu and Hämeenpuisto on foot and by bicycle.

The work area is marked in red, the motor vehicle route in blue, the bicycle route in pink and the pedestrian route in green. (maps also as attachments at the bottom of the page)

Work on the street will be carried out between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. The work will be done in two shifts.  Weekend and night work is carried out when the situation calls for it. To complete the work faster and reduce the duration of adverse effects, the work will be done in two shifts.

The traffic arrangements being introduced now will remain in effect until the end of September 2025.  As a whole, the roadworks will last until the end of 2026.

Unobstructed access on foot and by bike to shops and residential properties – take advantage of nearby parking spaces

Pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users, for example, will have unobstructed access to commercial and residential properties. Parking along Puutarhakatu will not be usable for the duration of the work.

Those visiting the street should leave their car in the parking spaces on Näsilinnankatu, Hämeenpuisto, Kauppakatu and Keskustori or the P-Frenckell and P-Näsinkulma parking garages and walk the rest of the way.

Parking spaces for people with reduced mobility will be moved from Puutarhakatu and Kuninkaankulma around the corner to Kuninkaankatu.

Properties will be accessible by car – sections of Puutarhakatu will be two-way

Traffic arrangements during the roadworks will also allow properties on Puutarhakatu to be accessed by motor vehicles. From Hämeenpuisto, cars can drive on Puutarhakatu until the worksite at the Näsilinnankatu intersection and back to Hämeenpuisto. This section of Puutarhakatu will be two-way.

Puutarhakatu can also be accessed from Näsilinnankatu until the worksite at the Kuninkaankatu worksite. This section of Puutarhakatu will be two-way.

Turn from Puutarhakatu onto Kuninkaankatu and towards Satakunnankatu

From Aleksis Kiven katu, cars can access Puutarhakatu, where they must turn onto Kuninkaankatu in the direction of Satakunnankatu. The pedestrian street between Satakunnankatu and Puutarhakatu will not be usable during this time.

Kuninkaankatu is to remain one-way for car traffic throughout the roadworks.  Pedestrians will use both sides of the street, while cyclists will use the western side.

Through traffic blocked until autumn during the initial phase of the roadworks

Motor vehicle through traffic on the street will only be blocked while the water supply and stormwater trunk lines are being built on the street.  The street will be reopened for cars already in autumn. Restricting through traffic allows work to be carried out more safely and with fewer phases.

Underground pipelines to be replaced first

Among other things, the water pipes, sewerage and district heating pipes on Puutarhakatu will be replaced. A district cooling line will also be built, and the stormwater network’s functional capacity will be improved.

The work will begin with soil heating, after which the excavation work will begin along the entire width of the carriageway at the intersections of Kuninkaankatu and Näsilinnankatu. During this excavation work, old pipes will be renewed, and technologies will be added under the street.

The old brick sewerage will be replaced with a completely new one, and a larger pipe will be added alongside the current stormwater pipe. A trench will also be dug for district cooling.

Between Kuninkaankatu and Aleksis Kiven katu, work will be carried out on the pedestrian and bicycle path on the north side. At a minimum, properties will be accessible via overpasses. Cable excavation will begin at the Hämeenpuisto end.

This year, traffic nearby will also be affected by surface-level roadworks on Aleksis Kiven katu between Puutarhakatu and Satakunnankatu.

Once finished, Puutarhakatu will be safer and more pleasant

In addition to street infrastructure renewal, the roadworks on Puutarhakatu will improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, traffic safety, the flow of maintenance traffic and the attractiveness of the street. A wider two-way bicycle path will be built on the northern side, and pavements will be built on both sides of the street.

The street will also have parking spots for cars, bicycles and scooters as well as loading places for maintenance traffic. Street lighting will be renewed. Trees along the street will be renewed – more than half as many new trees will be planted.
