– Bringing the World Frisbee Golf Championships to Finland has been a goal of mine for more than ten years. Bringing the world's most prestigious Frisbee golf event to Tampere and Nokia is a testament to the work we have done for the sport over the years. I am convinced that we will be able to organise a historic event together with the host cities and the Finnish sporting community, says event director Jussi Meresmaa.
Frisbee golf has grown exponentially in recent years. In Finland, the sport has hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts. In particular, the growth of shield frisbee golf has been very rapid.
The World Championships will be played on two top courses. Nokia's "The Beast", familiar from the European Open, offers an almost perfect combination of technical and open fairways. The Tampere Disc Golf Center, established in Tampere in 2018, is a modern, state-of-the-art course that challenges players in all areas, especially mentally.
The World Championships are by far the most important competition in the sport. The event brings all the best players in the world to Finland, as well as an estimated 25 000 spectators. The regional economic importance of the competition for Pirkanmaa is estimated at €3-4 million. Both Tampere and Nokia are enthusiastically involved in organising this unique competition.
– The City of Tampere welcomes the entire professional team and is particularly proud to be the first non-American destination to host the World Championships. It has been a long time in the planning and now we can work together, says Perttu Pesä, Director of Major Events of the City of Tampere.
– For many years, Nokia has successfully hosted the international European Open Frisbee golf tournament, which has attracted around 15,000 visitors to the city during the event week. It's great that we can offer a high-quality setting for the world championships together with Tampere. The World Frisbee Golf Championships will bring Nokia a lot of international visibility, event visitors and a positive impact on the regional economy of Pirkanmaa, says Eero Väätäinen, Mayor of Nokia.
