Shared cargo bikes rental works as a self-service in Vuores

The rental of electric cargo bikes started in Vuores at the end of August. In a 15-month experiment, bike rental works on a self-service basis as a collaboration between three operators.

Annika Viiala from Willari and Tiina Leinonen from the City of Tampere encourage you to leave the car at home sometimes and try out the new cargo bikes for commuting to work or hobbies or even trips.

There are three different types of electric cargo bikes available for rent: a 2-wheel box bike, a 3-wheel box bike and an electric bike and trailer combination.

The service is provided in cooperation with the City of Tampere by Willari and Lainappi Oy.

– We want to offer a low-threshold opportunity to get to know cargo bikes and bikes with trailer, and whether one would suit your everyday life to replace car trips or family cars, explains Tiina Leinonen, programme manager of the Carbon Neutral Actions development programme.

Bicycle rental operates on a self-service basis from the Klaava premises next to Vuoresaukio. Since July, it has already been possible to rent shared items from Lainappi boxes in the same place. Bicycles are rented using the Lainappi app, as well.

– The self-service enables the use of the cargo bikes with extended opening hours, and the testing of new digital solutions at the same time. We hope that the shared use of goods and bikes will also embrace a sense of community, when people support and guide each other in the new ways of everyday life, adds Annika Viiala from Willari.

Willari, a player in the bicycle industry from Tampere, has cooperated with cities, housing associations and companies in promoting sustainable mobility.

– What was learnt in previous projects has now been utilised and applied, when a new service has been innovated for people moving around Tampere. We have experience in promoting the transportation of goods and children by bike, but this is the first time cargo bikes are included, says Viiala.

In winter, the cargo bikes get studded tyres

The rental period for cargo bikes is from 1 to 14 days. The rental price is 15 € per day and 60 € per week.

The cargo bike rental experiment will last until the end of October 2025. This long trial period enables the people of Tampere to get to know the mode of transportation thoroughly - for example, how a cargo bikes work in frosty weather.

– The bikes are always equipped appropriately for the season. In winter, studs are installed to the tyres, confirms Annika Viiala.

The rental is part of the City of Tampere's Carbon Neutral Actions development programme's sub-urban sharing economy trial, which promotes the sharing of goods and vehicles. Vuores is one of the program's target areas.

We want to enable new ways of living and encourage people to think about their own ways of owning goods. Renting and borrowing instead of buying brings many benefits to everyday life and it also has a significant impact on the consumption based emissions, says Tiina Leinonen.

Cargo bikes make it possible to transport children and various items in a versatile way. You can transport up to 60 kilos of cargo with the Vuores box bikes.

This is how the Vuores cargo bike rental works

  1. Download the Lainappi application, create a user account and add payment information in your profile.
  2. Search the app with the search term 'Vuores' and select the bike you want to rent. Set pick-up and return times, send a rental request and pay for the rental.
  3. When your rental period starts, pick up the bike from the self-service point in Klaava premises. You can get the bike keys and other accessories from the bike-specific compartment of the Lainappi box. You can open the box through the app.
  4. The bike-specific instructions in the premises guide you, e.g. for attaching the battery and bike computer, using electric assistance and riding the bike.
  5. Enjoy the joy of cargo cycling! When you park the bike during rental, please lock the bike in a fixed frame rack or take the bike indoors.
  6. At the end of the reservation, return the bike. The app and the instructions will guide you on this as well.

The bikes are located at Vuoreksen puistokatu 87, 33870 Tampere. Vuores Sale is located in the same property. The space has its own entrance from the Vuoresaukio side. The doors are open according to Sale's opening hours from Monday to Sunday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Carbon Neutral Actions development programme invites residents and businesses to build a more sustainable everyday life together with the City of Tampere. The aim is to significantly reduce emissions from mobility and consumption, and to promote the circular economy and biodiversity. The Carbon Neutral Actions Development Programme will run from 2022 to 2025.
