Tampere is the most active municipality in Finland
The City of Tampere has been selected as the most active municipality in Finland at the Urheilugaala ("Sports Gala") on 16 January 2025. The Association of Finnish Cities and Municipalities states in its selection criteria that increasing activity in Tampere is a common issue for the entire city, spanning all sectors.
The seventh annual Finnish Most Active Municipality Award was presented this year to the City of Tampere. The theme for 2024 was community-based movement, with the aim of highlighting the ways, ideas and operating models of municipalities that encourage citizens to exercise together.
Tampere creates the conditions for everyone to be active and realise their dreams. International events and free physical activity opportunities, such as the "Lupa liikkua" activities for children and young people and free day swimming for senior citizens, promote a sense of community and diversity in physical activity, the Association of Finnish Cities and Municipalities states.
The City of Tampere is humbled to receive the award and is delighted that its years of long-term work to promote physical activity have been recognised as significant at national level.
– Tampere is the capital of sport and physical activity. This recognition is a great indication of how our determined work to promote physical activity and well-being is also visible to the outside world. I am particularly grateful to the people in Tampere who are involved and who promote this cause. We are committed to creating opportunities for everyone to exercise, regardless of age or background, whether children, young people, adults or seniors. This award belongs to all Tampere citizens, because together we are the most active municipality, says Kalervo Kummola, Mayor of Tampere.
Congratulations Tampere!
