Winter hobby equipment and a sewing machine added to the shared item boxes – cargo bikes got winter tyres
The shared item boxes in Tesoma, Vuores and Linnainmaa have been supplemented with winter sports and camping equipment in December. A much-wanted sewing machine has also been added to the Tesoma box. The cargo bikes in Vuores have been fitted with studded tyres.

Rental prices for shared goods start from a few euros. For example, a day's rent for snowshoes and a sewing machine is 8 euros.
In 2024 July, the City of Tampere, in cooperation with Lainappi Oy, launched a service to promote the sharing of household goods. The trial has gone well and the service has been found in all three areas. In the first few months, goods were rented around 200 times.
– The aim is to make the service as accessible as possible to people in different areas, so that many people will be inspired to try renting goods. During the summer, we collected requests for items to be rented, and these requests have now been taken into account by adding items to the boxes, says Tiina Leinonen from the Carbon Neutral Actions development programme.
The range of goods in the boxes varies according to location. Brand new items added in December in the boxes include adult and children's ski sets, snowshoes, a Trangia camping stove, a raclette pan and a sewing machine.
The hit product of the boxes are the various textile washers.
– With the arrival of autumn, demand for goods has fallen slightly as the season and activities have changed. We have responded to this by updating our winter products for hire. The new products are great for indoor and outdoor activities. We are looking forward to seeing which new product will be the most rented," says Kimi Siefen from Lainappi.
The cargo bikes of Vuores got studded tyres
Renting items from the shared goods box is done via the Lainappi app. In addition to goods, electric cargo bikes can be rented using the Lainappi app. The cargo bikes a situated in Vuores Klaava property, in the same space as the shared item box. Cargo bikes have been fitted with studded tyres.
– Winter cycling is a great way to enjoy the beauty of winter and keep moving at the same time. What better way to enjoy winter than to pack your skates, a blanket and hot chocolate on your cargo bike and cycle with your family or friends to the skating rink at Vuores Central Park? say Annika Viiala from Willari.
Willari is partnering with the city in a cargo bike rental trial. The cargo bike service is a self-service. A comprehensive video guide to renting and using the bikes has been produced.
– We have received a lot of positive feedback from people who have rented bikes about the smoothness of the rental process. The self-service concept allows you to rent a bike exactly when you need it, says Viiala.

There has also been interest in cargo bikes in West Tampere. From June to October, City of Tampere had an renting trial together with Lootabikes.
– In July and August, bikes were rented for a wide variety of occasional needs, such as day trips with children or dogs, holiday trips, transporting goods - even as a means of transport for a wedding couple. Towards the autumn, longer-term rentals were more popular. We are satisfied, we will try to continue the rental of cargo bikes in West Tampere next year, says Tiina Leinonen.
The rental services are part of a neigbourhood sharing economy trial of the Carbon Neutral Actions development programme of the City of Tampere. Aim of the trial is to promote the sharing of goods and vehicles.
Renting and borrowing goods instead of buying them is an important way to reduce climate emissions from consumption.
