Development projects in the Särkänniemi area

The aim is to develop the Särkänniemi area into a hub of adventure and recreation that is active all year-round. This page introduces the new functions that are in the plans for the area.

Särkänniemi Oy and the City of Tampere are in charge of developing the area. The plans, division of responsibilities and schedules will be defined in more detail as the work progresses.

Scenic bridge

The northern section of Näsinsilta Bridge, located in the east corner of the planning area, has been transformed into a park-like scenic route where pedestrians can stop to admire the fantastic views across Lake Näsijärvi. Motor traffic towards Ranta-Tampella has been redirected to the southern section of Näsinsilta, which also has a dedicated bike lane. The scenic bridge was completed in 2022.

Tram stop

In 2023, the public transport connections in the area improved significantly with the tramline that first opened services to Santalahti and then onwards to Lentävänniemi. The tram stop serving the Särkänniemi area is located on Sepänkatu, in the vicinity of the Paasikivenkatu junction.

Waterfront routes

An extensive high-quality network of waterfront routes is among the most important objectives on the agenda for urban development in Tampere. The walking and cycling routes running along the rapids and the lake shores connect the various city districts to each other and make it easier to get around the city. The routes also enhance the other recreational uses of the waterfront areas. In the Särkänniemi area, the aim is to expand the network with, for example, a nature-trail-type scenic route that would connect to the waterfront route running through the Santalahden rantapuisto lakeside park.

Development of a route from the Puistosilta bridge and Mältinranta waterfront towards Särkänniemi is currently underway.

Mustalahti Harbour and Särkänsilta

The functions and services of Mustalahti Harbour are being developed to meet the needs of the operators active in the area and new visitors alike. A pedestrian bridge will be built across the Kortelahti bay, connecting the harbour more closely with the amusement park and making arrival at the park entrance easier from the city centre. Harbour services and marina docks will remain in Mustalahti, and the objective is to also continue to enable traffic by larger vessels.

The construction of Särkänsilta was launched in January 2025. The Mustalahti Harbour master plan was placed on public display in December 2024.

Särkänniemi Amusement Park

The Särkänniemi Amusement Park is the best-known tourist attraction in Tampere. The aim of the development is to connect the Särkänniemi area more closely with the city centre and to enable the geographic expansion and development of the amusement park into an all-year adventure destination. One of the new all-year services in the amusement park will be a Media World that develops children’s media skills.

Hotel and indoor water park

A hotel is in the works at the bottom of the Kortelahti bay, inviting visitors to spend the night by the lake in the immediate vicinity of the tourism services of Särkänniemi.

Waterfront restaurants

A restaurant boulevard is in the plans for the northern Kortelahti waterfront, to the east of the Lake Centre, which will also attract visitors to the area outside of the amusement park opening hours and season.
