Population of Tampere exceeds 250,000
- A quarter of a million inhabitants is great news, a warm welcome to all new Tampere residents. Tampere has always been a place where it is easy to come and build your own life. It's great that Tampere is attracting new citizens, developing and moving our city forward again, says Kalervo Kummola, Mayor of Tampere.
When Tampere was founded in 1779, the city's land area covered an area of 3.2 square kilometres from Tammerkoski to the Pispala border. At that time, less than 200 people lived in Tampere. In 1950 the population passed the 100 000 mark, and in 2003 there were already 200 000 inhabitants.
So what are the people of Tampere like today?
Tampere is particularly attractive to students, and the largest age group in the city is 20 to 29-year-olds. The average age of inhabitants is 41.5 years. The proportion of children under the age of 10 has decreased in recent years, and more than half of the households consist of just one person.
According to the results of a survey about the well-being of people in Tampere, conducted in spring 2023, eight out of ten inhabitants perceive their quality of life as good. At least the same amount of people feel safe and comfortable in their residential area. Nine out of ten are aware of their possibilities of exerting an influence and feel that they can participate in the cultural events of the area. An equally big share also enjoys the walking routes in their area. More than half of people in Tampere say their favourite places are green spaces, such as parks and forests, and the banks of waterways. Almost everyone has a hobby, and one in five does voluntary work. A summary of the results of the well-being survey will be published in the last week of May 2023.
The residents speak at least 160 different languages, the ten most common being Arabic, Chinese, English, Estonian, Farsi, Kurdish, Russian, Somali, Spanish and Swedish. Net immigration to Tampere has been on the increase. The number of foreign-language speakers has steadily increased over the decades, currently being around 9% of the city population.
A population projection plan describing the city's expected and desired demographic development has been drawn up for Tampere. According to the planned population projection, the population of Tampere will reach 300,000 by the end of the analysis period (year 2040).
