Strike affects early childhood education services and catering services 13-14 February 2024

The strike will affect the possibility to provide full early childhood education services from 13 to 14 February 2024. There will be large-scale closures of groups of children or day-care centres and a concentration of services in certain day-care centres. During the period of political industrial action, the opening hours of nurseries will have to be reduced.

The number of children admitted to early childhood education and care on the day in question is limited to the number of staff available, within the limits of the law. This may mean that not all children can be accommodated on that day or that the service hours may have to be limited.

Day-care centres and pre-primary education units will inform guardians of the exceptional arrangements Monday 12 February 2024.

Pre-school is closed 13-14.2.2024 due to staff shortage. Supplementary early childhood education is provided in day-care centres, but children can only be admitted on these days in accordance with the number of staff present, subject to the legal limit. This means that not all children can be accommodated on these days. The pre-school services will inform parents of the details.

There will be no Open Early Childhood Education and Care club activities on 13-14 February 2024.

As the service will have to be limited and not all children can necessarily be admitted to early childhood education, it will not be possible to transport children to the day-care centers or pre-school.

The absence of a child during a political strike is free of charge if the child's carers make their own arrangements or if early childhood education and care cannot be provided on the days in question.

Day-care centres which  are open during strike days

East:
Vellamo, Hippos, Sampo, Pellervo, Kalevanharju (Onnela-talo is open), Tasanne, Kämmenniemi, Orimus, Atala, Linnainmaa, Itätuuli, Pappila, Irjala (kartano closed), Takahuhti and Messukylä.

West:
Amuri, Villilä, Haukiluoma, Tesoma, Hyhky, Kalkunvuori, Tahmela, Pispala, Niemenranta, Lielahti, Ikuri and Jussinkylä.

South:
Järvensivu, Talvitie, Multisilta, Juva, Metsäniitty, Annala, Vehmainen, Kaukajärvi, Etelä- Hervanta, Kisapuisto, Muotiala, Mustametsä, Tuomikuja, Kukkapelto, Vuores, Isokuusi, Veisu, Koivistonkylä and Kanjoni.
 

Impact of the strike on the catering and cleaning services of the City of Tampere  

On Tuesday and Wednesday 13-14 February 2024, the strike will affect Pirkanmaan Voimia's catering and cleaning services in day-care centres, schools and secondary schools. The effects of the strike will still be visible the following week in the form of menu changes. 

Day-care centres  

A variety of snack products will be available in nurseries. Pirkanmaan Voimia is unable to supply special dietary products. It is advisable to pack from home snacks that can be kept at room temperature for your child.  In order to ensure the food safety of others, strongly allergenic foods such as nuts should be avoided.

Schools

It is not possible to provide hot meals in schools during the strike. A variety of snacks will be provided for school lunches. Pupils can bring their own snacks that can be kept at room temperature to supplement the offer.  Pirkanmaan Voimia will not be able to cater for special dietary requirements during the strike days. In order to ensure the food safety of others, strongly allergenic foods such as nuts should be avoided.

The strike will not affect the catering and cleaning services at the Konetalo temporary accommodation, the Vuores Park School and the Erho unit.  

Afternoon clubs in schools

Afternoon clubs in schools will not be able to provide snacks. Children can bring their own snack that can be kept at room temperature. Foods that are highly allergenic, such as nuts, should be avoided to ensure the food safety of others.

Upper secondary schools and vocational education

Catering cannot be provided in educational establishments and student restaurants are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday 13-14 February. The strike will not affect the Virta campus in Lempäälä, Tredu Mediapolis and Metsätie, Pirkkala, Orivesi and Virrat Units.   

Cleaning services  

In schools, day-care centres and educational establishments where cleaning services are provided by Voimia, efforts will be made to carry out the necessary cleaning operations. Establishments where cleaning services are provided by an external service provider will not be affected by the strike.

The strike may have a possible impact on the cleaning of swimming pools.

Impact of the strike on the coming week's meals

During the coming week, 20-24 February, the impact of the strike will be reflected in possible changes to menus.

Primary education

The strike will not affect the normal working practices in primary education. School days will follow the timetable.

Due to the strike from 13 to 14 February, morning care in early childhood education will not be provided from 7 to 8 am. Morning and afternoon activities for schoolchildren will take place as usual from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It is not possible to provide hot meals in schools during the strike.

Trade unions have announced a strike on Wednesday and Thursday 14-15 February 2024 on the Nysse tram and bus lines. The strike will not affect the normal working practices of primary education, school days will follow the timetable.
