Pre-primary education also starts when schools start. Approximately 2,000 children will begin pre-primary education in Tampere. In comprehensive schools (classes 1–9), approximately 18,700 pupils will start their school work.
Schools will tell you more about the beginning of the academic year on their own websites.
When schools begin, it is important that all road users observe caution and pay attention to traffic safety.
Reading and writing skills will be strengthened
At the beginning of the academic year 2024–2025, there will be some changes to the curriculum. One more native language lesson will be added in grade 7. This change gives pupils more time to strengthen their basic reading and writing skills, among other things. The Education Committee decided on the matter earlier in the spring as part of changes related to the distribution of lesson hours.
The job description of native-language teachers has been expanded in schools. Going forward, many native-language teachers will support pupils in their own language during school days as well. This change affects pupils whose native language is not Finnish or Swedish. Receiving guidance in one’s native language is a part of strengthening learning outcomes at schools.
Access to a personal computer from grade 6 onwards
What is new is that from this autumn onwards, students starting sixth grade in Tampere schools will be given their own laptops at the beginning of the autumn semester. The personal laptops are meant to be used until the end of comprehensive school.
From this autumn onwards, the Tampere schools will reinforce the guidelines and operating model for basic education, which will restrict students' unwanted telephone use during lessons. These guidelines apply to all schools providing basic education. The guidelines prohibit the use of mobile phones during lessons for anything other than learning.
