Two draft options for the alteration of the detailed plan at Kaukajärvi School are available for viewing
The purpose of Juvankatu 13 is to enable the implementation of a larger school, day-care centre, library and youth facility on the Kaukajärvi School plot. The new facilities will accommodate approximately 1,300 pupils and 160 children in daycare. The current school for 700 pupils accommodates a pre-school and comprehensive school classes 1 to 9, which have 720 pupils and a total of 60 teachers.
The planning area is located in the Kaukajärvi district, approximately 7 kilometres southeast of the city centre. The area includes the Kaukajärvi School plot and part of the Muinaushaudanpolku path. The total size of the area is approximately 3.3 hectares. The Kaukajärvi school building, designed by Harry Schreck and completed in 1971, is located on the plot. The current building has 1 to 3 storeys.
The library and day-care centre are currently located on the plot south of the school. The leisure centre, which will remain on its plot, is also located south of the school.
Description of options
Two alternatives have been drawn up for the plan draft, the first of which suggests that the current school building could be demolished and replaced in its entirety with a new building. In the second alternative, the building could be only partially demolished, which would preserve the wings next to the Juvankatu street that have long traditions in the Kaukajärvi streetscape.
Both options also allow for full preservation. In both of them, 19,000 square metres of floor area have been allocated for the permitted building area. Currently, the school building has 6,769 square metres of floor space.
For both options, the maximum number of floors allowed is four. A ventilation machine room may also be placed above the top floor.
More trees should be planted in the yard, which would not only increase comfort and introduce shaded places of spend time but also support the ecological connection in the east-west direction. Additionally, existing trees must be preserved on the western and northern edges of the plot and supplemented with new plantings. The protection of groundwater and noise issues should be taken into account in the planning and construction of the area.
Taking road safety into account
Part of the plot next to the Juvankatu street borders the street area, meaning that road safety could be improved on the Juvankatu street and especially at the bus stop.
On the southeast side of the school, it is possible to re-route the Muinaishaudanpolku path so that the path would connect to the north side of the Muinaishaudankatu street.
Escort and maintenance traffic and parking are located in the northern part of the plot in both alternatives, and a playground with sports facilities protected from traffic noise is located south of the building. In the plan, bicycle parking is mainly located in the southwest corner of the plot.
